Senior Software & AI Engineer

About the role

Applied Materials is seeking an experienced Senior Software Engineer to lead the development of calibration system software for advanced electron microscope columns. You will work at the intersection of software engineering, physics, and laboratory hardware, delivering high‑performance, automated calibration workflows.

Key responsibilities

• Own architecture, design, and implementation of full‑stack services for calibration workflows, from hardware control loops to operator‑facing UI.
• Develop and optimize algorithms for numerical methods, computer vision (registration, pattern matching, tracking), and real‑time image processing.
• Apply data‑science techniques to measurement data, design experiments, and quantify system performance.
• Build AI‑specific infrastructure, including physics‑informed SDLC agents, tools, and evaluation pipelines.
• Create hardware simulation and monitoring tools to support algorithm development and automated testing.
• Collaborate closely with physicists, product, design, and other R&D teams to validate and ship solutions.

Required profile

• 5+ years of professional software development experience.
• 2+ years of R&D experience with algorithms or machine learning, including end‑to‑end feature ownership.
• Deep expertise in concurrency, parallelism, and multi‑threaded dispatchers.
• Strong system design skills for microservices, distributed systems, API design, and message‑queue or event‑streaming architectures.
• Background in numerical algorithms, optimization, and image‑processing fundamentals.
• Hands‑on AI engineering experience with LLMs, agents, prompt/context engineering, and tool‑calling.
• Solid engineering practices: end‑to‑end testing, regression testing, CI/CD, Docker virtualization.
• B.Sc. in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field (or equivalent industry experience).
