Senior Backend Engineer – Routing Data

About the role

Via is looking for a Senior Backend Engineer to join its Routing team, building the backend systems that power its GIS and mapping platform. You will design, develop, and scale distributed services handling large geospatial datasets and real‑time events, supporting multiple products worldwide.

Key responsibilities

• Design, build, and scale backend systems and data pipelines for Via’s GIS and mapping platform, from design through production deployment and long‑term ownership.
• Develop Python‑based pipelines that ingest, process, and transform large‑scale OpenStreetMap and other geospatial datasets.
• Model, store, and query complex spatial data using PostgreSQL and PostGIS, optimizing schemas, indexes, and queries for high‑throughput workloads.
• Build and maintain APIs that expose geospatial data to other services, frontend applications, and data consumers.
• Improve system reliability, observability, and performance through monitoring, alerting, benchmarking, and continuous optimization.

Required profile

• 6+ years of backend software development experience with languages such as Python, Go, or Java.
• Strong experience designing and operating distributed systems in production.
• Solid understanding of databases, data modeling, and performance optimization (SQL and NoSQL).
• Experience with PostgreSQL and PostGIS or other spatial databases is a plus.
• BSc in Computer Science or equivalent.
