Research Engineer – Applied ML & AI

About the role

Tomax is seeking a Research Engineer to join its core product team and work directly with the CTO on production systems that serve tens of thousands of students worldwide. The position focuses on advancing exam integrity and educational assessment through applied machine learning and AI research.

Key responsibilities

• Collaborate with the CTO and engineering team to design, implement, and evaluate AI models for exam integrity and behavioral analysis.
• Develop unified, explainable integrity models that fuse video, audio, and interaction data.
• Research and prototype AI solutions for educational assessment and analytics.
• Analyze noisy, real‑world datasets, formulate hypotheses, run experiments, and communicate findings.
• Identify hidden insights in data and propose new product features.

Required profile

• Current PhD student in Computer Science, Data Science, Machine Learning, Computer Vision, NLP, or a related quantitative field.
• Strong software engineering fundamentals and hands‑on ML experience.
• Proven research autonomy: hypothesis formulation, experimental design, and clear communication of results.
• Comfortable working with noisy, unstructured data and bridging academic depth with product realities.
• Entrepreneurial mindset and ability to self‑manage between academic and engineering demands.
