Senior Software & AI Engineer

About the role

Applied Materials is seeking an experienced Senior Software Engineer to develop calibration system software for advanced electron microscope columns. The role combines scientific computing, image processing, and distributed systems to enable fully automated calibration workflows.

Key responsibilities

• Own architecture, design and implementation of full‑stack services for hardware control loops and operator‑facing UI.
• Develop and optimize algorithms for numerical methods, computer vision, and real‑time image processing.
• Apply data‑science techniques to measurement data, design experiments and quantify system performance.
• Build AI‑specific infrastructure, including physics‑informed SDLC agents and evaluation pipelines.
• Collaborate with physicists, product, design and R&D teams to validate and ship solutions.

Required profile

• 5+ years of professional software development experience.
• 2+ years of R&D experience with algorithms or machine learning.
• Strong concurrency expertise and system design for micro‑services and distributed systems.
• B.Sc. in Computer Science, Engineering or related field (or equivalent experience).

Required skills

• Concurrent and parallel programming, multi‑threaded dispatchers.
• Micro‑service architecture, API design, message queues or event streaming.
• Numerical algorithms, image processing, computer vision techniques.
• AI engineering with LLMs, prompt engineering, tool calling and evaluation.
• Software engineering best practices: CI/CD, Docker, automated testing.
