Senior Backend Engineer (Java)

About the role

Itron builds digital platforms for utilities and cities to manage energy and water, and is looking for an experienced Senior Software Engineer specializing in Java to join its R&D team. You will help design, build and scale an enterprise-grade platform within Locusview, the fast-growing Resiliency Solutions business unit.

Key responsibilities

• Build the company's ecosystem from technical design through development and deployment.
• Design, develop and maintain scalable Java-based services in a microservices architecture.
• Help implement and expand proprietary APIs used by many enterprise clients.
• Improve backend services supporting existing web and mobile applications.
• Take ownership of features across the full software development lifecycle.
• Collaborate with developers, QA engineers, product managers and architects.
• Research and integrate technologies that improve scalability, performance and reliability.
• Participate in code reviews and contribute to engineering standards.

Required profile

• B.Sc. in Computer Science, Software Engineering or a related field.
• 5+ years of professional software development experience using Java.
• Strong problem-solving, communication and collaboration skills.

Required skills

• REST APIs and backend services.
• SaaS products built on a microservices architecture.
• Relational databases and SQL.
• Docker, including containers, images and Docker Compose.
• Clean code and testing.
• Preferred: AWS (S3, EC2), Redis, OpenSearch, SQS, Angular or React, Leaflet, Ionic or Capacitor, GIS/geospatial data, CI/CD pipelines.
