Physicist – Advanced Optical Systems

About the role

Applied Materials is seeking an experienced physicist to join its R&D team developing advanced optical microscopy systems for semiconductor inspection. The position combines hands‑on laboratory work, optical system modeling, and multidisciplinary collaboration to create next‑generation inspection tools.

Key responsibilities

• Develop advanced optical and electro‑optical modules, integrating lasers, light sources, detectors, high‑end optics and electronics.
• Design, build, execute and analyze laboratory experiments to validate concepts and performance.
• Perform physics‑based simulations, optical system modeling, data analysis and performance budgeting.
• Lead investigations of complex physical problems, identify root causes and define technical solutions.
• Collaborate with applications, algorithms, electronics, mechanics, software, systems engineering and external suppliers.

Required profile

• PhD in Experimental Physics, Electro‑Optics, Applied Physics or a related field.
• Significant hands‑on experience with optical or electro‑optical laboratory systems.
• Strong analytical ability to connect measurements, simulations and system‑level performance.
• Proven capability to lead technical investigations and work independently.
• Excellent communication and teamwork skills across multidisciplinary groups.

Required skills

• Experience with lasers, detectors, optical design, imaging and microscopy.
• Proficiency in optical physics simulations and system modeling.
• Data analysis and performance evaluation using MATLAB, Python or similar tools.
• Knowledge of Zemax or comparable optical design software.
