Applied Science Manager, Personalization

About the role

Amazon’s Personalization organization is seeking an Applied Science Manager to lead a team of scientists developing next‑generation, LLM‑powered personalization systems for e‑commerce. You will define technical vision, drive a cutting‑edge research agenda, and translate breakthroughs into production‑ready solutions that impact millions of customers.

Key responsibilities

• Set and communicate the technical roadmap for LLM‑based personalization.
• Lead, mentor, and grow a high‑performing team of scientists and ML engineers.
• Partner with engineering and product teams to ship research into customer‑facing features.
• Represent the team’s work to senior leadership and influence product strategy.
• Foster a culture of scientific rigor, innovation, and cross‑team collaboration.

Required profile

• PhD or equivalent research experience, or a Master’s degree.
• 3+ years of experience managing scientists or machine‑learning engineers.
• 3+ years leading teams that build and deploy ML models for business applications.
• Proven track record in applied research on recommendation systems, information retrieval, NLP, or large language models.
• Strong strategic thinking and communication skills with senior leadership.

Required skills

• LLM training, fine‑tuning, and adaptation (e.g., tokenizer modification, domain adaptation).
• Sequential recommendation techniques.
• User intent/mission modeling.
• Behavioral modeling for personalization.
