Job description
About the role
The Principal Engineer, Point of Care Ultrasound (POCUS) sets the technology vision and direction for POCUS transducer array and image-processing technology within GE HealthCare's POCUS business. The role combines deep expertise in physics and array signal processing with a strategic understanding of clinical and customer needs, the company's IP portfolio and the competitive landscape. It drives breakthrough innovation, differentiates POCUS platforms and grows engineering talent through mentorship and hands-on collaboration.
Key responsibilities
- Set and drive the technology vision, multi-generational roadmap and product development plans for POCUS transducer array and image-processing technology.
- Apply physics expertise (acoustic wave propagation, transducer materials, beamforming) and array-processing techniques from ultrasound, sonar or radar domains to solve imaging and sensing challenges.
- Architect and evaluate trade-offs across transducer hardware, front-end electronics and image reconstruction/signal-processing pipelines.
- Influence global product roadmaps and segment leadership with technically differentiated recommendations.
- Serve as the technical readiness focal point for engineering teams, partners and customers on POCUS technology questions.
- Coach and mentor engineers and scientists, and champion innovation by generating, evaluating and de-risking concepts and supporting patent creation.
- Track GE HealthCare's position against competitive and academic advances, and partner with R&D, clinical, regulatory and quality functions to meet safety, regulatory and quality requirements across the NPI cycle.
Required profile
- Master's degree (minimum) in Physics, Electrical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Acoustics, Applied Mathematics or a closely related field; PhD strongly preferred.
- 10+ years of progressive engineering or scientific experience, including system-level design and delivery of complex sensing or imaging products.
- Demonstrated track record of technical innovation such as patents, publications or shipped breakthrough products.
- Excellent communication skills and a proven ability to coach, mentor and collaborate visibly within engineering teams.
Required skills
- Knowledge of acoustic wave propagation, transducer behavior and array signal-processing theory.
- Hands-on experience in medical ultrasound imaging systems, sonar/underwater acoustic arrays, or radar/phased-array sensing.
- Desired: direct design experience with ultrasound transducer arrays, beamforming, adaptive/synthetic-aperture processing, and working knowledge of AI/ML methods applied to ultrasound or array data.
- Experience in regulated medical device environments (FDA, IEC 60601, ISO 13485) is a plus.
