Mechanical Research Engineer

About the role

HP Indigo is seeking a Mechanical Research Engineer to join its R&D Supplies organization. You will lead the creation of innovative mechanical solutions for advanced digital printing systems, taking concepts through prototype development to product release.

Key responsibilities

• Translate system and customer requirements into technical specifications, design concepts, and execution plans.
• Perform mechanical design activities, including concept generation, engineering calculations, trade‑off and tolerance analysis, material selection, and design optimisation.
• Drive multidisciplinary integration with electrical, software, and system engineering teams.
• Design, build, and execute experiments, prototype testing, and validation to support design decisions.
• Use simulation and analytical tools to verify performance, reliability, and environmental compliance.
• Participate in design reviews, presenting solutions, trade‑offs, risks, and mitigation strategies.
• Lead root‑cause analysis of product performance issues and customer escalations.
• Support manufacturing processes such as machining, injection molding, extrusion, and sheet‑metal fabrication.

Required profile

• BSc in Mechanical Engineering (required); MSc or equivalent is an advantage.
• 7–10 years of R&D mechanical engineering experience in a multidisciplinary environment.
• Strong analytical thinking and problem‑solving abilities.

Required skills

• Mechanical design methodologies and engineering tools.
• Analytical modelling, simulations, and experimental validation.
• Mechanism development, machined components, sheet‑metal design, and material selection.
• Motion‑control systems, electronics, and software interface knowledge.
• Experience with machining, injection molding, extrusion, and sheet‑metal fabrication processes.
